1. Sajid Javid calls on tech firms to do more to tackle child abuse

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has backed calls from the National Crime Agency and National Police Chiefs’ Council for technology companies to implement greater measures to prevent their platforms from being used to distribute child sexual abuse images (The Guardian). New NCA figures indicate up to 80,000 people in the UK represent an online threat to children, with a 700 per cent increase in reports of abuse images from social media companies since 2012 and a growing trend for the live streaming of child abuse content. The NPCC’s Simon Bailey said that tech firms are expected to “acknowledge their social responsibility in preventing and designing out this type of offending from their platforms”.
